No matter what size phone system you are thinking about, you will find that is a huge variety of models and options to choose from. Even a single-line phone system can be packed with the same powerful features as a traditional PBX or the latest digital equivalent. The thing to keep in mind is that as your business grows you will need to grow your phone system to match. You want to identify the features that are flexible and provide expansion of not only handsets, but required features as you ramp up and grow the business. Here are the important points to look for when considering a phone system. - Determine the correct phone system type for your business. You can go with a traditional and less expensive PBX system that is strictly analog if you have basic need from your phone system. If you want more flexibility and greater expansion, you should consider a digital system.
- Correctly estimate the demand for the system and look for a system that has the right number of outside lines. You should also look for a system that will provide expansion of the number of outside lines (not extensions) either with a simple upgrade, or right out of the box. Make sure you have enough trunk capacity to handle your estimated call load for at least the next 12 months.
- Don’t overbuy features on your handsets. Most phone providers will try to up sell or package a number of handsets to increase the total package price. If you really don’t need a digital display on the phone, don’t buy it. Also only consider multiple line features with displays for executives and their assistants.
- Make sure you find a dealer who provides both service and support. It is also good to get a package on the installation if possible. Let the experts install your system. Also make certain key employees receive training on setup and maintenance of the system.
- Make certain whatever system you select has an adequate voicemail system. A missed call can mean missed revenue.
