FTP software refers to software applications designed to allow users to easily transfer files over the Internet using File Transfer Protocol. FTP software comes in a variety of flavors and feature sets, but the most basic element is that it allows users to upload files to a web site. i.e. FTP software is key to nearly all types of Internet content publishing.

The number of FTP software programs available on the Internet is immense. Dozens, if not hundreds, of FTP software applications have been written. Some are available for free, but may have very limited functionality. Others are shareware, allowing the user to try the product before purchasing.
