Interior Design Schools

If you are thinking about a career in interior design or you simply want to improve on your interior design skills, you should consider enrolling in an accredited interior design school. An interior design school provides advanced skills and the type of solid background that you will need if you are interested in attaining certification in the filed of interior design. This is important because in the past few years many states have recognized interior design as a regulated profession. What this means is that you are required to attain certification and in some cases licensing along with demonstrated study at an accredited interior design school and practical experience.

Interior design schools can be independent not for profit entities or they can be part of a larger art institute. While either type of school can provide a quality education, you can often times have more choices and make more contacts with a smaller school that specializes only in interior design. These schools offer such courses as antique appraisal, window treatment design, textiles and finishes, and even drafting.

In general it is best to look for an interior design school that provides a broad based education including the fundamentals of color, spatial relations, and architectural design. You also want to find a school that will help you with licensing and placement. You should keep in mind that many interior design schools offer both BA and MA programs which can make it possible to apply for many forms of financial aide.

Depending they type of institution you plan to attend, costs can vary quite a bit. For example a private design school can cost as much as $700 a unit for undergraduate work. This can add up over time and you based on this per unit cost you can expect to spend as much as 24,000 per year in tuition. Public universities that have interior design schools usually cost a bit less depending on where you live.
