Military Schools

While the conventional wisdom for many years has been that military schools are for troubled teens and under achievers, that fact of the matter is that many young people can benefit from the effects of a military school. Military schools are private institutions that are as interested as building character as building academic achievement. Military schools provide a high degree of structure to the lives of the students and place them in a situation that promotes social interaction, camaraderie and friendship.

Most military schools are designed to remove children from the influences that cause distractions is both their private and academic lives. This is done by removing the trappings of luxury and privilege, forcing the child or young adult to become part of a cohesive unit and by removing items that make the child stand out such as clothing, jewelry etc. All students who attend a military school or academy are normally require to wear a uniform. Except for various rank and awards that are displayed on the uniform, all of the cadets look the same and are expected to keep their appearance neat and tidy. This guideline removes outward social barriers providing a level playing field that is based solely on achievement and merit. This can be a huge confidence builder for certain individuals.

Another important component of the military school is that they remove the child from the parents during the week allowing the child to become self reliant and able to function in real world situations. Most military schools promote the idea that the cadet earns rights and privileges as they addend the school. For example a student who misbehaves will be given demerits and have certain privileges revokes such as the ability to attend certain functions, or the ability to leave the campus. The typical military school employs a code of honor that is enforced by the students peers instead of traditional authority figures. This has been shown to help children with authority problems more likely to follow the rules and change antisocial behavior.

In addition, most military schools are interested in improving the child’s physical ability along with their academic abilities. Most schools require the student to be involved with some sort of sport and promote competition and sportsmanship. Many schools have traditional sports such as football, baseball, volleyball, swimming and soccer, but many also have specialty sports such as scuba diving, polo, and handball.

Military schools normally allow students from the first through 12th grade to attend. These days most are co-ed, and some schools are only for high school aged students. Prices vary quite a bit, but the average annual tuition for a military schools is about $20,000.00
