Tax Preparation

With tax time once again approaching, it is time to start thinking about your tax preparation options. For many years you had pretty much 2 choices when it came to tax preparation. You could let a professional account or tax preparation firm such as H and R Block prepare the forms for you, or you could prepare your taxes yourself. The benefit of having an accountant or agency prepare your taxes is the confidence in knowing the forms are properly filled out and all of your possible deductions have been taken. Doing your own taxes has traditionally meant dealing with confusing forms, missed deductions and mistakes.

These days there are several alternatives to the two traditions tax preparation approaches. If you have a personal computer, you can purchase a program that will guide you through the process of filling on your tax forms quickly and simply. These programs also have extensive help sections that will explain some of the more complicated sections in plain English. If you don’t have a personal computer, but you have access to the Internet from work or the public library, there are a number of online tax preparation solutions that could work for you. These services work very similarly to the stand alone application that runs on your personal computer, but all of the information and records are stored on their server so you can work on your taxes from anywhere you have Internet access and they handle safely storing the data. Both of these solutions allow you to either file your taxes electronically or print out forms that you can mail to the Government.

All of the alternatives described here have benefit and depending upon your personal needs and preferences, you should be able to find a solution that fits your own personal situation. I think you will find that tax preparation does not need to be painful even if paying them might be.
