Fish Oil

Fish oil is gaining in popularity with consumers as a considerable amount of research is being presented that shows the benefits of fish oil on a wide variety of areas of health. Recent studies have shown that fish oils, especially those that are high in Omega-3 fatty acids, can reduce the risk of cardiovascular events (heart attack or stroke), as well as slow the progression of atherosclerosis, reduce triglyceride levels and lower the triglyceride/HDL ratio.

The American Heart Association recommends consuming fish that is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids at least twice per week. Patients at greater risk of heart disease, or with high cholesterol are recommended to eat fish as often as daily, as recommended by their doctor. They also recommend, given that it is not always possible to eat fish as often as they recommend, that taking a fish oil supplement can be beneficial.

It should of course be noted, that many studies about the benefits of fish oil used patients consuming fish as part of their diet, and not supplements. Eating fish is generally recommended as the best course of action, with supplements reserved for those that cannot eat enough fish in their diet. It is also generally recommended that fish oil supplements be taken with a meal, rather than individually.
