Massage therapy is a massage-based treatment for pain and discomfort of muscles and joints using hands-on manipulation of soft tissue, tendons, ligaments and skin. While it has been accepted for some time that massage can relieve muscle stress and body tension, it is only recently that massage therapy has become recognized as viable alternative to surgery and has helped many people recover from injuries. Licensed massage therapists administer massage therapy and for this reason, in many cases, your doctor can refer you to receive massage therapy as part of the treatment for ailments and injuries. If your doctor prescribes massage therapy, you will normally receive treatment 2 – 3 times per week for 4 – 6 weeks. Your doctor will then consult with you and your massage therapist to determine if the massage therapy is effective and you need to continue treatment. Most people find a single treatment effective and seldom require additional therapy.
