Awnings

Awnings and canopies are an excellent way to add shade to your yard, deck, patio or other areas. Awnings come in a wide variety of styles, sizes, materials, and price ranges. The most common variety of awnings are made of canvas, and have wood, aluminum, vinyl or metal supports. Awnings are generally quite flexible in design, and can be used to cover patio areas, entire decks, or other areas of the yard that need shade. Many companies also offer retractable awnings that can be automatically opened and closed as fits the weather.

When looking for an awning, be sure to keep these tips in mind:

1) What is your budget? Different materials or features can quickly add to the price. Higher quality materials will often last longer however. Retractable awnings, especially those that are powered, can cost significantly more than stationary awnings, or manually-operated awnings.

2) Are you planning to install the awning yourself, or have it professionally installed? Depending on where you are installing your awning, and the type you are using, installation can be fairly complicated. Try to check on how easy installation is before you buy.

3) Be sure to check out the warranty offered by the awning manufacturer. Higher quality awnings should offer longer warranties, allowing you to get more years of use out of your investment.

4) Check on how the awnings are rated for both water and wind-resistance.

5) Keep in mind that awnings can fade over time. Complicated fabric patterns can look appealing when new, but may not look as nice after years in the sun. Higher quality awnings will often have better fade resistance, and retractable awnings will reduce the amount of time the canopy is in the sun when not in use.

6) Be sure to shop around for the best price - There are a number of excellent online retailers of awnings. Comparing prices across different sites can help you find the best deal possible. Just make sure you are comparing awnings of similar quality. Like most things, you get what you pay for when shopping for awnings.
