Garage Door

If your garage door is in poor repair, sagging, hard to lift, or you are simply ready for a fresh new look, you will find that today’s modern garage doors are easy to maintain and to operate. There are many different styles of garage doors to choose from so a new garage door not only provides added security and access to your home, but can provide a design element that enhances the look of your home.

There are essentially two main styles of garage doors available on the market today. These are sectional rollup doors, and one piece tilt up or pivoting doors. Sectional rollup garage doors are composed of four to five sections that are attached using bolts and hinges. These sections are then placed on a track using rollers and a counter spring to provide a smooth operation. A hinged garage door can swing up and out on large hinges with counter springs to help raise the heavy door. Another type of pivoting garage door is known as the carriage door which is composed of two sections that pivot on either side of the garage and meet in the middle.

Sectional garage doors are considered to be the most secure and weather tight because they fit snuggly on the top and sides and because of their design, they can’t be pried open from the sides. Tilt up garage doors on the other hand tend to be less expensive by about 25% or 35% of a comparable rollup style garage door.

Garage doors of all types are made of wood, metal, and fiberglass although wood and metal are by far the most popular. Wood doors can be stained or painted to match your home and to add an architectural accent. Metal doors are normally painted at the factory and they can be produced with a wood grain look. Metal garage doors are depending on the material (steel or aluminum can be either heaver or lighter than a comparable word door. Metal is however more durable and does not require the same maintenance as a wood door. Aluminum is lighter, but can be dented fairly easily. If you are considering a metal garage door, you should also think about adding an insulation option. This will help to maintain an even temperature in your garage year round.

Prices of garage doors vary depending on the features, styles and materials. High quality wood doors made of natural hardwood can cost $2000 - $3000. Paint grade wood panel garage doors normally cost in the $350 - $700 range. Steel garage doors normally cost between $700 and $1200 fully installed.
