Grandfather Clocks

'); // --> Grandfather clocks are more than just a large floor clocks. They can be a piece of fine furniture, a family heirloom, and probably one of the biggest long-term furniture investments you will make. Grandfather clocks come in a wide variety of styles, shapes, and colors even thought there are only three major manufacturers for grandfather clocks in the US (Howard Miller, Sligh, and Ridgway). When you are deciding on a clock you should consider both the quality and workmanship of the cabinet as well as the movement. Grandfather clocks are normally manufactured separately from their movements, which are typically imported from Europe (mainly Germany). Of the three German movement manufactures today, I would recommend Hermle as they have the most accurate and longest lasting movements available. Grandfather clocks also come with different chime and winding options. Although they are more expensive, you should consider a cable driven system rather than a chain driven one. They are easier to wind and tend to have fewer problems long term. In addition chimes can be mounted on the back or the side of the mechanism. I believe rear mounted chimes are both esthetically more pleasing and provide the best performance. Finally I recommend that you purchase your grandfather clock directly from a clock dealer. They will provide you with better long-term service and will be much more knowledgeable than a furniture store. |
